This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
