The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
